ARE (Anti-Racist Education) Saturday School Workshop: Critical Race Theory

Join us for our first ARE Saturday School workshop of the year, on February 26th, 2022 from 8:30-11:30AM as we explore our Liberation Inspiration theme for February, Critical Race Theory. This workshop is an important capacity building strategy integral to the work of supporting education equity in schools across the region.

“Critical Race Theory is not a noun, but a verb. It cannot be confined to a static and narrow definition but is considered to be an evolving and malleable practice. It critiques how the social construction of race institutionalized racism perpetuates a racial caste system that relegates people of color to the bottom tiers. CRT also recognizes that race intersects with other identities, including sexuality, gender identity, and others. CRT recognizes that racism is not a bygone relic of the past. Instead, it acknowledges that the legacy of slavery, segregation, and the imposition of second-class citizenship on Black Americans and other people of color continue to permeate the social fabric of this nation.” - Kimberle Crenshaw

Register for this workshop and explore what Critical Race Theory is, why is it up for debate, along with actions to take to ensure equitable education is a reality for students in our region.

Pre-reading: Missouri House Bill 1474

We Made It! A Fundraising Event and Celebration

This November, for EEC's one year anniversary, let's all get together as friends fighting for an equitable school system in St. Louis. Let's refuel together, celebrating our growing community.

What:

We Made It: A Fundraising Event and Celebration! will take place on November 18th at The Magic House @MADE from 6-8:30pm. There will be fun EEC Alumni project activations, things to make, eat and drink. But most importantly, there will be a beautiful community of anti-racist educators and advocates to connect with!

Who:

Our (adult) friends in education equity! We love the kids, but this event is meant for those over 18. No need to dress up, come in your play clothes! We also ask that all event attendees be fully vaccinated against covid-19 & wear a mask while indoors and not actively eating or drinking.

Why:

We believe in empowering educators and administrators to be the changemakers in their school, districts and communities. The horrifying racial inequities abundant in our education system are unsustainable for a thriving St. Louis. Supporting our organization helps to shift the direct impact of inequity in districts, schools and classrooms by facilitating workshops, programs and transformational team processes with educators at both individual and institutional levels to increase the anti-racist analysis of educators in the St. Louis region.

Tickets:

Tickets are "Pay What You Wish" with a suggested donation of $100. This helps us cover our event costs, while still keeping the event accessible to all in our community.

STL Business Leader's Education Equity Lunch & Learn

Why is education equity important for St. Louis's business community?

“Deaths due to limited economic and educational opportunity affect us all. "Education is the key to unlocking opportunity for the next generation. Data shows that education unlocks economic recovery, innovation, and climate action. It improves inclusion, antiracism, peace and security, and much more." - The Education Finance Playbook, 2021

"K-12 is the only system that EVERY child will access, it is the opportunity to develop young human beings to continue the pursuit of creating a more perfect union." - Dr. Leah Austin, Schott Foundation

ARE (Anti-Racist Education) Saturday School Workshops

ARE (Anti-Racist Education) Saturday School Workshops

The Education Equity Center of St. Louis envisions a transformed education system that is free of racism and harmful practices, policies and systems negatively impacting black and brown students.

Given the histories of systemic racism that are deep and pervasive in education, we will need to understand and address the mental models we are operating from in order to move towards this vision. To this end, we build the anti-racist capacity of educators in the St. Louis region.

On July 27th-29th, we will host ARE (Anti-Racist Education) Summer School Workshops from 8:30am-12pm on the following topics:

  • July 27th: Grounding and Language: Introduction to Anti-Racist Education

We have been so ‘action driven’ to do Anti-racist work that we’ve overlooked fundamental truths about transformative change. This workshop is centered around intentional transformative change that happens when we begin with our inner work. We will pause, reflect on our individual journeys, and consider how to employ our findings to mobilize and inspire our anti-racist work in our communities.

  • July 28th: Root Cause and Impact: History and Data

Systemic racism runs deep and is pervasive in education. This workshop is centered around understanding the root cause and impact of oppression and socialization, how it manifests in us and affects the students we serve. We will spend time understanding and addressing our mental models in order to work towards a vision of equitable education for St. Louis.

  • July 29th: Action and Accountability: Anti-Racist Education Systems Change

Participants will identify strategies to dismantle racism in education while learning about action planning and implementation based on anti-racist values and a redesign of structures accountable to Black, Brown, and Indigenous People of Color groups.

Attending each session is encouraged but not required. Reserve your spot via Eventbrite
